This is 15 year-old Kaylee Gain.
A St. Louis, Mo. teenager is fighting for her life after a vicious beating, fracturing her skull and left her with serious brain damage.
“Her family’s life shattered when their only daughter was assaulted outside of a North County high school,” reads a GoFundMe page set up by a friend on behalf of the victim’s family.
Her alleged assailant, a 15-year-old girl identified by some students as Maurnice DeClue, was arrested in connection with the brawl. She is currently being held by St. Louis County Family Court on assault charges. Video of the Friday fight went viral in recent days, showing two girls squaring up for a brawl that immediately goes wrong for Gain. After being thrown to the ground, she takes several punches to the head before having her skull repeatedly bashed against the concrete.
Other teens continued fighting around Gain as she laid limp in the street, shaking while convulsing. Shocked onlookers can be heard reacting off camera to the extent of the violence they witnessed. Gain suffered “major brain bleeding and swelling” and remains in critical condition, while loved ones wait to learn the extent of her long term injuries, if she pulls through. They also say she suffered a skull fracture and frontal lobe damage as well. She’s battling for her life as she remains hospitalized in critical condition following last week’s incident. As of Wednesday evening, the fundraiser to help cover healthcare costs has earned more than $200,000 since being posted on Tuesday.
St. Louis County Police confirmed a girl suffered “a severe head injury” in a fight near a high school Friday afternoon, but named neither of the teenagers involved.
Kaylee was seen alone and convulsing on the ground as the scuffle continued to play out around her, which included several other teens throwing punches at one another. According to her family. EMTs eventually arrived on the scene and rushed Kaylee to a local hospital in St. Louis, but it seems like the damage might’ve already been done by then.
The teen girl who assaulted Kaylee was arrested on a first-degree felony charge, but the case is currently being handled by the juvenile court system due to the perpetrator’s age. However, she could be tried as an adult, depending on how a court hearing plays out in a couple weeks. If Kaylee’s condition worsens, it could spell bad news for the culprit in question too.
I watched the video against my better judgement. It’s graphic and violent. Kaylee started the attack first, but what ensued is just horrible and unspeakable. I had a really hard time watching it and honestly, it’s extremely hard to watch. You can hear at some point, the act was so violent that, Kaylee’s head is heard hitting the concrete ground multiples times. The girl fighting her, obviously was trying to kill her. How can you not comprehend, for one second, the action you are doing is going to lead to this person being critically injured, in this manner, while her head is being slammed on the cement numerous times ? What is going on, through someone’s head, that they have to act so violently?
The same thing almost happened to me, when i was in my early 20’s and live in Montreal, in Quebec, Canada. I was taking a walk with my then, boyfriend, minding our own business, when i heard this girl scream at me, behind us. I tried to ignore it because i knew she was talking to me. She specifically screamed at “The girl in the red pants” which i was wearing sports red pants, at the time, being the only one, with red pants, in the area at the time. I tried really hard to ignore her, but of course she wouldn’t stop. After a few minutes i turned around to see what she wanted. No reason at all. Maybe jealousy ? She just had to try to start a fight. I didn’t even know her ! She started calling me names. She was with a group of other teenagers.
Anyway, i dont remember who started it, but a fight followed between the both us. She was a much bigger, 3 times bigger than me, black girl, with a bunch of friends cheering her up. She slammed me on the ground really hard and i knew, as i was falling, my head was gonna hit the ground if i didn’t brace myself. So with all my strength, i managed to keep my head above my chest, so only my back would hit the cement, while she was pounding on me, pulling my hair off. The other people with her, started moving toward us, and were going to jump in, but my boyfriend told them to stay back. If he hadn’t been with me, i probably would have ended up in the hospital. All that, because out of nowhere, someone was bored, felt like starting a fight with someone they don’t even know, for no reason at all.
I mean, what is it with people ? Are they that sad in life, that you have to act like an animal and look for a fight, just because ? In Kaylee’s situation, even if she started it, there is NO good reason to have bashed her head, that way, if it wasn’t to kill her. I don’t care if you get riled up, the adrenaline is high. I have never seen something as despicable as the action of Maurnice, in this case. That’s not how teenagers fight. I saw fist fight, hair pulling, punching, pushing, but i have never, ever seen something like this. It’s nothing to be proud of at all, unless you are out of your mind, with zero empathy and even at that… It’s disgusting that someone would do something like this to another teenage girl, unless you meant to really harm the other person and fight dirty.
Im going to pray for this poor girl that is in the hospital, but even if she lives, i have doubts she will ever be the same ever again. It’s scary to think that if your teenager could end up in the hospital, or even dead because of a stupid fight. Is it worth the risk of spending the rest of your life in prison, because you almost killed somebody else ? It’s sickening.
Dear Friends and Family,
I am organizing this Gofundme for Kaylee’s family.
With heavy hearts I am asking for support for our beloved Kaylee and family. In minutes, this family’s life shattered when their only daughter was assaulted outside of a North County high school. She was left alone on the ground to convulse before EMTs arrived on the scene. She was admitted to one of the local hospitals in Saint Louis with a skull fracture and frontal lobe damage.
She has major brain bleeding and swelling and is in critical condition. Kaylee is fighting hard to stay alive and heal but this is only the beginning of a very uphill battle for Kaylee and her family. We will not know the extent of the brain damage that has occurred until she wakes up but the path to recovery will be extremely hard on the family, not only mentally but financially. Her mother and father are staying by her side night and day hoping to bring her back to the Kaylee they know and love. Your support would help with lost wages and piling up medical bills due to intensive care treatment.
Every Donation, big or small, will go directly towards easing these stressful days, allowing Kaylee’s family to be able to be there 100% for her day and night and help with the medical bills that they foresee.
For anyone that is or cannot donate now, please keep Kaylee in your thoughts and prayers for a full recovery. Please share this far and wide so that we can reach everyone’s hearts in this family’s time of need.
The overwhelming response from friends, family, and the community has already brought the family to tears. They offer everyone their deepest gratitude. Thank you for coming together for them in this time of need. ❤️
