The War on Wolves

A couple of years ago, I stopped following groups on Facebook that support wolves. I just got tired of seeing comments from uneducated people arguing with themselves, about why wolves, should not be reintroduced, blah blah blah. It was literally like talking to a brick wall. You cannot reason with these people, who are bent on believing that wolves are vermin, and should not be allowed to live.

Predators don’t have the right to live according to them. We hunt down coyotes, wolves and bears, because we don’t like having any predators, taking OUR food. I mean, we own all the deer and elk population, according to wolves hunters and no one is allowed but us, to kill them. We control their population and no one else, right ? We love controlling everything. We have to control everything, because we killed all the predators. So now, there is too many deer here, too many elks there, too many prairie dogs, too many rabbits. Where does it ends ?

The result from our control, is that some states have too many prairies dogs, because we hunted the black footed ferret, to almost extinction. Then people start whining about the fact that prairie dogs cause havoc on their ranch, because their livestock breaks their legs, in the rodent’s holes, dug up everywhere. Well, who’s fault is that honestly ?

Others have too many rabbits, because all the coyotes were killed. Then we cry about having too many deer in others, because we killed all the wolves. In the end, we just love having control over everything, over every single animal and complain about the results. We don’t want to share with other predators either, so we gave them a bad reputation, to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“The Oregon wolves have arrived in Colorado. Five were released today with paws on the ground. Three males and two females.” Wolves have been released, to be reintroduced.”

I’m actually quite sad about this, because I don’t think they will survive very long unfortunately, thanks to people who will probably kill them. Everyone knows where they have been released. People are keeping track of them, wherever they go, sharing their location. It’s only a matter of time before someone goes out to kill them. Take a look at what happens to the wolves in Washington and Oregon, every year, because ranchers are crying that they get too close to their ranch. Ranchers that leave their cattle out in the open, to graze all day, on acres and acres of rented land, without guard dogs, or secure measures to keep their cows safe, because they are too lazy and cheap.

You know these ranchers refuse to take proper measures to keep their cows safe, because that’s what they want, for the wolves to be killed. They get compensation from the state for each animal killed by predation, on top of what they get when the animal is ready to butcher. Yet it is not enough. They post their sad face on Facebook, followed by a picture of a cow that was supposedly killed by a “wolf” to trigger others, to share the same feeling they have, about wolves. It doesn’t matter that, that cow was going to end up as patties in your big mac, and that they get their money back from the state. They just have to cry about it and let the whole world know how bad wolves are. Oregon and Washington kill entire packs of wolves every year, because of those ranchers.

I mean, just look at the comments from those ignorant people. He says: “The wolf is an invasive species”, a typical uneducated mentality. Well, before your state killed all the wolves, there were actually wolves roaming there… It’s not an invasive species, it’s just one you caused to go extinct in that particular state.

Another mention :”The elk herd is strong because we are keeping it that way” No, it’s not strong because of you buddy. Do you hunters have a sixth sense in order to hunt an old elk, a sick one, one that has a disease ? No you don’t. You only hunt the strong animal, in order to get that big huge rack, as a trophy in your living room. Wolves possess that sixth sense. Humans don’t. Colorado actually has an overpopulation of elk, because there are no predators. This is exactly what happens to prey animals, when there are no predators. I watched a documentary a while ago about a pack of wolves, hunting an old, sick bison. From a mile away, the alpha male knew that this bison was dying. Did he run over there immediately to kill it ? No he didn’t. He waited all night for the bison to pass away and after it did, then the wolves ran over to eat it.

We humans, are the only creatures that truly kill for pleasure, for fun, for vice. Animals don’t. They hunt to survive. If a wolf hater was reading this, they would most likely laugh at this post, refusing to see the truth, telling others it’s all lies, because they refuse to acknowledge anything that doesn’t agree with their opinions.

Prey animals are overpopulated and then humans have to “Control” the overpopulation by allowing hunting. But oh no, we humans don’t want to compete with other predators. We are the only species allowed to hunt animals. This guy in a Facebook post, also thinks that wolves kill 80 elk per year… and even states in the same sentence, that there are almost 1500 Elks in the state of Colorado. Oh no ! So what if they take out 80 elks out of a 1500 herd ? (They actually don’t kill that many per year) This small pack of 5, certainly wouldn’t. Wolves are smart and wouldn’t kill something so big, just the 4 or 5 of them, that would be too risky. Being injured in the wild is often a death sentence. Wolves know that. The guy who made that comment, also admits that he googled his information…. well if that doesn’t take the cake, i don’t know what does.

On the other hand, instead of believing i read on the internet, i do my own research. I watch plenty of documentary, movies, videos, read books, before i form my own opinions. This comes from many years of also reading people’s comment on different social medias, gathering all that informations. What do they do ? They google their informations, they share memes that demonize wolves, allegedly killing calves, baby elf, fawns, etc.

While most people are for the reintroduction, we of course, always get a few bad apples that are totally against it, because they think wolves will kill their children, their pets, their animals. They believe the “The Three Little Pigs” story is real. They love to spread propaganda about wolves. Do you really think a lone wolf will take down an elk on its own ? That is absolutely laughable! An adult male elk can weight up to 700lbs, sometimes more. Yet a wolf that weight at most 80lbs, (Yes 80lbs, people think they are dire wolves size for some reasons) would be able to kill elk. (Insert laughing emoji) If anyone knows anything about wolves, when they are on their own, they will hunt small prey like rabbits, squirrels and things like that. In the wild, wolves pack, except in large areas where they can thrives and form bigger packs, are usually in smaller pack of 2-3 members.

Wolf haters would do anything to make you believe, that wolves are really bad. The problem in Washington and Oregon is that, while the wolf population is growing, there is less food, because the wolves packs are getting bigger and in larger number. They have to travel further to find food. Ranchers are allowed to let their cattle graze over hundreds of acres, without making sure they are safe. It’s pretty obvious why a wolf pack would kill a cow. I understand that sometimes it can happen. There are wolves that unfortunately, will keep coming back to the same area, to kill the cattle, because they found an easy prey. You would think a respectable, ethical racher who care about their cattle would take measures to prevent this after the first attack.

Why wouldn’t they ? Those wolves found a hunting spot, where there is free meat for them, that poses no danger, because cows can’t fight back. After the first attack, you would think that the ranchers would try harder to deter the wolves from coming back. They let their cattle give birth in the middle of nowhere, then wonder why wolves and bears are attracted to the area. Keep in mind you also have cougars in the area. There should be harsher laws for ranchers that live where there are wolves, and let their cattle be killed repetitively, without doing anything.

It’s no wonder some states are turning into a desert, with animals overgrazing everything, there is no moisture left for the ecosystem to do its job, with predators in it. While we are trying to control everything, we are also ruining everything and making things worse. But this, according to predators haters, makes no sense at all. They would rather believe everything they see and read on Facebook, about how bad wolves are. We make up stories to make sure that, even more people hate them. When was the last time a wolf actually ate a child ? Or a pet ? Even attacked a human ? Where is the logic in believing those false stories? Where is the proof ?

Instead of educating themselves and reading about wolves, learning about them, to learn a thing or two, they would rather keep being ignorant and keep accusing “Tree Huggers’ that they are right, they know the absolute truth, everything they say is right, and keep the propaganda about wolves going. Unfortunately I don’t see this changing anytime soon. People like that are stubborn, believe what they want to believe, refuse to expand their knowledge, on actual facts and spread these lies to their kids, making everyone believe that wolves are bad. I am less scared of going for a walk in wolf country than I am, walking in the middle of a big city, getting shot by a random human, attacked, or run over by a car going too fast.

Look at this picture. The article mention a “wolf” took a fawn… that’s not even a wolf, it’s a coyote. Fawns are often left on their own, so the mother can go foraging for food. It’s unfortunate but they are the perfect size, and opportunity for a 40 lbs coyote.

Let’s be honest here, wolves really are not the worst species on earth. They are only trying to survive, raise a family and do what any other animal does. We are afraid of wolves killing us yet, there are not even a handful of incidents that have happened, where a person was killed by a wolf, but there are countless humans killing other humans. Don’t be one of those. I learned a lot through owning a wolfdog. I learned everything I could about wolves and wolfdogs. I understand that they are trying to survive, just like us.

What is your thoughts on having more wolves in our states ?
