I first learned about this case by watching trial footage on YouTube and reading extensively about the young girl involved. More recently, I also watched the Netflix documentary. If you’re unfamiliar with Mackenzie Shirilla, she was a teenager from Strongsville, Ohio, who had just graduated from Strongsville High School shortly before the accident. At the time, she was in a relationship with her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and by many accounts, their relationship was deeply toxic.
Based on clips and discussions I’ve come across on social media, Mackenzie was often described as controlling, jealous, and possessive. Over time, she began spending more and more time with Dominic, and eventually, they moved in together at her parents’ home. She was also known to use drugs frequently and seemed to prioritize both her relationship and her interest in fashion above most other aspects of her life.
As their relationship progressed, it reportedly became increasingly volatile. Toward the end, Mackenzie was said to have become emotionally and physically abusive toward Dominic, and there were allegations that she had even threatened to crash the car while they were driving on the highway.

Mackenzie was raised by parents who, at least from the outside, appeared to give her a great deal of freedom, rarely setting firm boundaries or holding her accountable for her behavior. They were reportedly aware of her drug use and did little to intervene, which may have contributed to a lack of consequences in her life. As a result, it often seemed as though she believed she could do no wrong.
She frequently hosted parties at her parents’ home, inviting friends over almost daily. Drug use appeared to be a regular part of that environment, and in several clips circulating online, she can be seen driving while smoking and seemingly under the influence. These patterns suggest a lifestyle that was largely unchecked and increasingly risky.
In the time leading up to the accident, it seemed that Dominic had reached a breaking point in the relationship, though he may not have known how to assert himself or walk away. Reports suggest that Mackenzie had become increasingly pushy and verbally abusive toward him. Like many young couples, their relationship was marked by frequent conflicts, including multiple breakups followed by reconciliations.
Dominic’s mother, Christine, later shared that her son had called her in distress, saying that Mackenzie was threatening to crash the car. She described Mackenzie as extremely abusive toward him, reinforcing the pattern of volatility that appeared to define their relationship in its final stages.
Mackenzie’s disgusting and abusive attitude toward Dominic
The Crash
On July 30, 2022, Shirilla, Russo, and Flanagan attended several gatherings in the hours leading up to the crash. At around 10:15 p.m., they went to a graduation party at a friend’s house, but stayed for less than an hour. From there, they drove to the home of another friend, arriving at approximately 11:00 p.m. While there, they listened to music and smoked marijuana, remaining at the house into the early morning hours of July 31. They eventually left at around 5:30 a.m., just hours before the tragic incident.
At 5:34 am, a CCTV camera captured Shirilla’s 2018 Toyota Camry slowly turning right from Pearl Road into Progress Drive. One minute later, a second camera captured the car speeding with lights on at the end of Progress Drive crossing the T-split with Alameda Drive into the Plidco building, the corner of the brick wall exactly hitting the passenger side of the car. On the 2022 Google Earth Street View the impact site can still be seen as a blue plastic sheet covering this wall. The car was traveling at over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) when it crashed.
Video of the crash. Warning ! : It can be quite disturbing to watch.
First responders arrived at the scene 45 minutes after the crash to find Russo, Flanagan and Shirilla unconscious, with Shirilla’s foot still pressing the accelerator pedal. Shirilla was taken to a nearby hospital while Russo and Flanagan were pronounced dead at the scene. Police found psilocybin mushrooms and a digital scale in Shirilla’s possession.
What truly disgusts me in all of this, is the lack of remorse from Mackenszie and the parent’s attitude toward the whole thing, strongly denying that their daughter is, in fact, a murderer. This is the typical, abusive relationship, where parents should’ve put a stop to it. It often ends tragically. My personal opinion on it is that Mackenzie didn’t think she would’ve survived the crash. Who in their mind, at that age, will sincerely think that they are going to survive a 100 mph crash on a cement wall ? I think she had in mind that if she couldn’t have Dominic, then no one else would, and she would probably be better off being dead with her boyfriend. Unfortunately for Davion Flanagan, was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think she did feel guilty for a while that she survived and Dominic was dead and she was not going to be able to see him again, but at least, no one else would have him. I feel like she didn’t care at all about Davion.
The mother’s disgusting lack of accountability statement before the sentencing.
At the end of the Netflix documentary, her attitude and words say it all. She has no remorse for what happened, she doesn’t take any accountability for any of it and still doesn’t think she isn’t a murderer because in her head, she unfortunately survived the crash and doesn’t view it that way. She views it as a failed attempted suicide, but who is going to admit that ?
Her parents simply refuse to believe that their daughter is a murderer, even though the evidence showed intention by the way the car was driven into the wall and at such speed. They are in total denial over the whole thing, and don’t seem to even feel any emotion for the deceased young boys who lost their lives to a disturbed and emotionally unstable teenager at the time of the accident. This is the result of a young girl who was never told no in her life, could do whatever she wanted without punishment, and was raised like a princess.
I’ve listened to a few of the jail phone calls between Mackenzie and her mother and they are disgusting and sickening. The mother is more like a friend to her daughter and keeps telling her that she didn’t do anything wrong and that the accident was caused by Mackenzie having POTS, which was never confirmed by a doctor.
The friendship between the mother and daughter as well as their delusions, lack of remorse and accountability. The calls from jail right after sentencing.
As if it wasn’t enough, Mackenzie’s best friend was in complete delusion as well, stating that she did not believe her friend is a murderer and making excuses for Mackenzie’s behaviors.
I believe the judge when she says that Mackenzie won’t be out anytime soon and is probably why she gave her 15 years to life. Mackenzie will never truly admit any remorse or accountability for what she did to the young boys, especially with her mother who keeps telling her that she didn’t do anything wrong. She will be there for a long time. I am pretty sure of it.
